James Beard Foundation

James Beard, America's Dean of Cookery, left a long legacy of American culinary heritage.

The James Beard Foundation and the historic James Beard House in New York City are dedicated to preserving that heritage. In the same spirit, Smithfield is committed to preserving America's gastronomic heritage by providing great products for culinary professionals.

In May of 2003, Smithfield began a partnership with the James Beard Foundation which began at the 13th annual James Beard Foundation Awards celebration. Today, we continue to work closely with the foundation and its members to help preserve and promulgate America's culinary heritage.

All performing artists deserve a great stage. Musicians have Carnegie Hall. Opera singers have The Metropolitan Opera House. Chefs, winemakers and cookbook authors have The James Beard House. More than 20 dinners, lunches and workshops are held each month at The James Beard House to showcase culinary artists from around the world.

James Beard

James Beard is recognized as the father of American gastronomy. Throughout his life, he pursued and advocated the highest standards, and served as a mentor to emerging talents in the field of the culinary arts. He established the James Beard Cooking School and wrote many classic American cookbooks. With his dedication to great food, his name became synonymous with American cuisine and culinary excellence.

James Beard wrote more than 20 cookbooks during the course of his career.

The Foundation

The James Beard Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. It celebrates the country's culinary artists, provides scholarships and educational opportunities, serves as a resource for the culinary industry, and offers its guests the opportunity to enjoy the delights of fine dining.

Our Mission is to foster the appreciation and development of gastronomy by preserving and promulgating our culinary heritage, and by recognizing and promoting excellence in all aspects of the culinary arts.

Chefs and wine professionals from around the world are invited to showcase their talents at The James Beard House.
